What is Significant? The Seven Wonders of the World. Something remarkable happened at my Toastmasters meeting the Thursday of Valentine’s Day week. For those of you who may not know, Toastmasters is an international organization devoted to helping people gain public speaking and leadership skills. In the two years with my Toastmasters club, I have watched people grow from being terrified speaking in front of others, to confident leaders able to hold the stage and manage the meeting. This year, I’ve been the VP of Education for my club, WE Toasted. In that role, I create the theme for each weekly meeting. Beings it was Valentine’s Day week, I denoted the theme “Hearts, Love and Romance.” Our Toastmaster of the day first spoke of self-love, which we all need more of. Our first speaker, Sherry, spoke of making our country “greater” rather than “great again.” Sherry, not tall, with dark skin color, kinky black hair, having grown up in the south, has had a different life experience than our second speaker: Kathleen, tall, with light skin and long brown hair, who grew up in the west. Kathleen’s speech spoke to the importance of bridging the divide between those with different backgrounds and belief systems. I noticed the hotness of tears behind people’s eyes, including my own. The emotional waves of mutual acceptance and respect rippled through the room that day in WE Toasted. I volunteered for a Table Topic (impromptu, 1-2 minute) speech, and the card I drew asked what I felt the Seven Wonders of the World were. I could have pointed out geographical places on our planet. I could have said things like the theatre, arts, singing... But not that day. That day, I found the Seven Wonders of the World in my Toastmasters meeting. Kindness Compassion Respect Communication Action Joy Love We see each other with kind eyes, and treat each other with compassion and respect. We communicate with each other experiencing these qualities. We don’t just listen and communicate, we take action when needed. Kindness, compassion and respect, with communication and action, leads to joy, because you’re in community celebrating together. And, what is this, but love? Love for your fellow humankind. Amen.
