The Six Degrees Theory

The title of my first book is SIX DEGREES TO YOUR DREAMS (http://bookstore.iuniverse.com/AdvancedSearch/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=SIX+DEGREES+TO+YOUR+DREAMS) because of the six degrees of connection theory. For years, I have been using the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” movie trivia game as an example of how people are only six degrees from their dreams. Someone knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone who has that next step you need in your plan to fulfill your dream. That next step could be a resource, an idea, a contact, a piece of equipment, a hot tip on a real estate investment opportunity, a person who knows about lawn care, elder care, cooking or an office space for rent…the possibilities are limitless. In 2006, when I was writing ANOTHER SIX DEGREES TO YOUR DREAMS: A PERSONAL PRACTICE (meant to be an audio book with accompanying workbook, which I ultimately decided not to pursue publishing), I found out I am only two degrees from Kevin Bacon myself. I know someone who met him at a party in conjunction with the Sarasota Film Festival in Florida. The “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” concept was created by college students Mike Ginelli, Craig Fass and Brian Turtle and board and internet games have been created as a result. It’s great fun on a road trip! The process goes like this: Name your favorite actor alive today. Within six degrees, you can find links to someone who has worked in a film with Kevin Bacon. For example, Demi Moore. She was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon. Michael Douglas? He was in Disclosure with Demi Moore, who was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon. Two degrees. How about Anette Bening? She was in The American President with Michael Douglas, and you can take it from there. Three degrees. Whenever you feel stymied about how to move forward, remember...you may not know exactly what is needed next right now, but you probably know somebody who does. Authentically Yours, Laura
