Take One, Give Two I just had the most fantastic experience. You know those little libraries? (If not, find out more here.) https://littlefreelibrary.org/ There’s one close by here; I see it often on my Godwalks. This is a particularly pretty little library – it’s on a sturdy eye-level post, made of wood, has a peaked roof, two shelves, a door with a glass pane, and a nice big wooden knob. I’ve walked past it many times, peeked through the window a couple, and today opened the door. I found a book I wanted to read, Dovey Coe by Frances O’Roark Dowell. As I tenderly and gratefully took the book from the little library, I remembered I had two books waiting to be donated at home, just down the street and around the corner. A Summer all her Own by Roseanne Keller and The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton. I found “Summer” free at the Lake Oswego library and “Ruth” cheap at an antique and re-sale store on the coast when George was flying in a kite festival. I loved both books and didn’t want to wait one more minute to make my donation. I went home to get them and turned right back around towards the little library. A God-shot happened then. No kidding…there I was…walking back down the same street with two books…when a shiny, black compact SUV backed out of the little library driveway and headed my direction on the other side of the road. Instinct took over and I held up the two books with my left hand, pointed toward the little library with my right, and smiled at the driver I couldn’t see because of window glare. As the SUV got closer, I momentarily saw the driver’s face – a woman possibly around my age, fairly short hair, big smile, mouthing the words, “thank you.” If I hadn’t followed my instincts to go home, get those two books, and turn right back around to donate them to the Little Library, I wouldn’t have had that immediate experience of connection and joy with the Little Librarian driving the smart SUV.
