Get Your Brains Working Together: Creativity in Collage

A colleague recently told me she wanted to do something about the neural pathways between her brain hemispheres…not a topic which often arises in your typical professional meeting environment – although it should!

Google “neural pathways brain hemispheres” and be amazed by what you find. One particularly interesting article I found was written by a kindergarten teacher who had her students draw a picture of each sentence they were writing, incorporating a visual, spatial element for her right brain geared students. She also increased sound spelling and other activities; before too long her students were reading and writing at a second grade level.

I encouraged my colleague to try the three tips in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5kzAP2en7A She’s not a big outdoorsy gal – hiking isn’t her thing and she’s not a gardener, etc. I asked if there’s anything she likes to do with her hands – painting, any kind of artistic activities, and she shook her head responding “Uh, laundry.” The first thing that popped into my head was collage…and her eyes lit up.

Any activity you can get involved and mindless (thought-free) in is good for your brain, particularly in our western linear, left-brain-oriented educational and business systems. For you, it might be running. For me, it’s walking and a number of other things…including collage.

My home office (and website, for that matter) is filled with collages I have created. I can become so engrossed in ripping out and arranging images and phrases from magazines and catalogs that two hours pass by with nary a thought, just pure fun and creativity. Add some scissors, glue stick and poster board – and you have a super inexpensive and personal piece of artwork to put on your wall.

Sometimes I collage just for fun; other times I have a theme or intention in mind before I start. Either way, it’s amazing to look back at collages I created years ago and see how my life has transformed since in ways I was aiming for at the time I created them. Besides, they’re pretty!

Good, cheap fun! And it gets your brains working together. What does that for you?

Authentically Yours,

Laura
