Are You Scared to Speak?
Rumor (or is it statistics?) has it the number one fear in the world, above death, is public speaking.
Research also tells us babies are born with only two fears: of falling and of loud noises.
So, speaking in front of an audience isn’t a natural fear; it’s something we’re socialized into. I’ve known hoards (well, a bunch, anyway) of four and five-year-old’s who love being the center of attention with a captive audience of wine-sipping and appetizer-munching adults.
I somehow managed to escape this mortal fear of speaking. Maybe it’s because I started taking piano lessons at age seven, so was in recitals early in life. I was first on stage, in an operetta, in the fifth grade. I performed in plays, musicals, and countless musical groups all throughout high school. And teaching, being in front of a group helping others learn a skill, or inspiring the audience in some way, comes naturally to me. It’s one of my great gifts. We all have these great gifts.
On the other hand, I couldn’t hit a baseball with a bat any more than I could understand algebra or how anyone ever succeeded at it. For me, algebra was so painful it was like…plucking pubic hairs. (Forgive me for that top-of-mind analogy.)
And I hated my annual school photos so much (obviously, long before the days of social media and one-year-olds perfecting their Instagram look for Mom), I practiced smiling. No-one knew this; it was a private, sordid affair between me and my bedroom mirror. I got so good at smiling for the camera I became editor of my senior yearbook, just so I could fill it with plenty of pictures of happy, smiling me. I’m kidding. I think. At any rate…my senior pictures turned out great.
Is speaking in front of people, or in front of a camera, one of your fears? If it is, please tell me about your experience. I really want to know, because I’m formulating a new Speaker Coaching package, and I meet with my first Speaker Coaching client next week. This program helps speakers, authors, artists and entrepreneurs feel comfortable, confident and expressive speaking in front of people or on camera. Along with sharing your experience, let me know what you would want out of a program like this. I suspect it will be enormously impactful, and am eager for your input. Thank you for taking time from your schedule to read what I write. I so appreciate you!
